NSCC Invites Public to Free International Film Series

North Shore Community College's (NSCC) Council on International Education (CIE) is presenting a free International Film Festival in April and May. NSCC invites the public to view and discuss the films. Film contents may not be suitable for children. All films will be shown at 6:30 p.m. in room LE203 on the Lynn Campus, 300 Broad Street. For more information, call 781-593-6722, x6225.

April 19 - A Separation (Iran)
Set in contemporary Iran, "A Separation" is a compelling drama about life altering decisions in a marriage when a couple wins the opportunity to leave Iran for a better life for their child, but are faced with leaving the husband's Alzheimer's-afflicted father behind. Tumult ensues when the wife makes the decision to go although the husband feels he must stay.

April 26 - Invictus (South Africa)
Actor Morgan Freeman portrays anti-apartheid activist and former South African president Nelson Mandela just after the fall of apartheid during Mandela's first term in office. The film explores how the political prisoner-turned-president used the 1995 Rugby World Cup game -- which was hosted by South Africa -- as a means of bringing blacks and whites together after decades of violence and mistrust. Matt Damon co-stars.

May 3 - To Live (China) -
This is an epic but personal story of a young Chinese couple's relationship though tumultuous events as their station in life changes from wealthy landownership to peasantry. Though a Grand Prize winner at the 1994 Cannes Film Festival and recipient of the Best Foreign Language Film award at the 1995 BAFTA Awards, Chinese censors objected to the film's commentary about political abuses in China's past. As punishment, the director Zhang Yimou was forced to write a formal apology and was not allowed to make another film for two years.

Free Live Jazz & Vocal Performance Starring Pamela Means

Free Live Jazz & Vocal Performance Starring Pamela Means

North Shore Community College's (NSCC) Performing Arts Council invites the public to a free live jazz and vocal performance starring Pamela Means, award-winning, singer-songwriter & jazz musician. The performance will take place on Thursday, March 28 at NSCC's Lynn gym, 300 Broad Street. Set one will take place at 1p.m., set two at 2 p.m.

With her "mad-guitar-and-vocal skills" (Time Out New York) Means has toured throughout the US, Canada, Europe and Australia. Through her music, Means elegantly addresses a range of themes from the state of the union to the state of the heart. Curve Magazine calls her "one of the fiercest guitar players and politically-rooted singer-songwriters in the music industry today." With virtuosic musicianship, razor wit and a disarming sense of humor, Pamela Means is building a vibrant and remarkable career. Ani DiFranco says of Pamela Means, "you groove so deep, so deep I can't get out. And I wouldn't want to." We guarantee you won't want to either.
