Organization's Mission:
Founded on the principle that every person deserves a decent place to live, for over 20 years HomeStart has ended and prevented homelessness. HomeStart advocates provide support and compassion as they help walk clients through the difficult process of moving from shelters to permanent housing. After securing housing, HomeStart continues to help each participant re-integrate into their community by providing support services such as money management programs and life skills training. HomeStart also provides housing-search guidance to those who do not qualify to become a client during walk-in hours at both the Central Boston and Cambridge offices. HomeStart is also one of the first and one of the largest agencies in Boston that ends homelessness by preventing it in the first place. Our advocates have prevented over 3,000 low-income families and individuals on the verge of eviction from being homeless, by using innovative approaches such as – emergency mini grants, court intervention, and landlord mediation. For HomeStart to prevent an eviction it costs on average $726. It costs taxpayers approximately $30,000 a year to shelter that same family. Having a home restores a person’s dignity and offers the stability that is necessary for making other life changes, such as securing a job, advancing an education, regaining mental health stability, or maintaining sobriety. That’s why at HomeStart, we believe a home is where the start is.

Organization's Mission:
Motivated by the love of God, we are committed to integrity of mission and the stewardship of donations received to span the gap between where we are and where we need to be. This combination led Peter Drucker to state in his book, Profession of Management, "[The Salvation Army] is by far the most effective organization in the U.S. No one even comes close to it with respect to clarity of mission, ability to innovate, measurable results, dedication, and putting money to maximum use." First and foremost - The Salvation Army is a church so its Officers, who are ordained ministers, know they are responsible to the Lord in all they do because they serve in His name. Their commitment goes far, far beyond the demands of "a job." Second - Because of our focus on meeting human need without discrimination, we enjoy a wonderful public trust from donors from all walks of life. The tangible results of so many lives touched and healed gives confidence to our donors that their contributions will get to where they are most needed in their local community. Third - Besides the financial support of, there are countless others whose gifts in kind of food, clothing and the like empower the local pantries and kitchens and Family Stores to take care of individuals and families. And finally, there are the volunteers -those faces you might see preparing hot meals for the homeless, tutoring kids after school, distributing meals at Thanksgiving and Christmas. Over 4,000 strong, last year they lent over 330,000 volunteer hours to help us deliver service efficiently, effectively and from their hearts.

Organization's Mission:
BridgeHouse derived its name from the new housing concept at that time, “bridge housing,” which is an alternative temporary housing arrangement that seeks to bridge the gap between homelessness and independent residency. The mission of the house is to provide a continuum of strong support services for each family to establish self-sufficient lifestyles, and restore self-esteem and dignity to the head of the household and children. Today at BridgeHouse 11 families participate in a comprehensive service plan that includes benefits assistance, workshops and classes that target the development of tenancy skills and other life skills, such as parenting, budgeting, menu panning, health care services, mental health services, substance abuse treatment or prevention programs, domestic violence prevention services and referrals to any other programs necessary to assist our families.
