Girls of Lynn Volunteer Spotlight on: Janet Lowrey
Check out this month's Volunteer Spotlight at Girls Inc. of Lynn: Janet Lowrey!
Janet grew up just down the road in Middleton, which is also where she currently lives. She attended undergrad at Hartwick in New York where she received a Bachelor’s Degree in Anthropology and Spanish, and then went on to get her post-bachelor’s degree from Portland State University in Criminology, Criminal Justice, and Criminal Behavior. She now works with teens ages 14-23.
Janet is now in her 3rd year of mentoring! Her favorite part is, “seeing the relationship grow and seeing my mentee grow over that experience.” For Janet, mentoring, “goes back to the very mission of Girls Inc. – it helps the girls become stronger, smarter, and bolder.” Janet can’t wait to begin her 3rd year of mentoring and is most excited about, “forming that close relationship and close bond again.”
The middle school mentoring program at Girls Inc. uses a group mentoring model which matches one adult mentor with four Odyssey members. The mentor and mentees meet once a week for an hour to participate in a range of recreational and life skill building activities. The specific goals of the middle school mentoring programs are to improve girls’ attitude towards school, increase social skills and help girls feel supported.
