46 Lynn residents turned out January 16th to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day by serving the community. The event was co-sponsored by the East Lynn Community Association, Girls Inc., Centerboard, SCI Lynn, Communities That Care and the Lynn Food and Fitness Alliance.

Participants, including groups from Project Cope, Cub Scout Pack 121 from Troop 121 at St. Mary’s in Lynn and the NAACP, volunteered on projects at the YMCA and the Lynn Shelter Association in addition to collecting food, school supplies and winter wear at local businesses.

“We would really like to thank Lynn City Hall, Shaw’s Supermarket, Walgreens and Compare Supermarket for hosting our food, school supplies and winter wear collection locations,” said organizer Jesse Jaeger of the East Lynn Community Association. “We would especially like to thank Compare Supermarket and Al Calvo, owner of Compare and SCI Board Member, for matching items donated by their customers.” In total approximately $1000 worth of food, school supplies and winter wear were collected that were donated to the Lynn Shelter Association, My Brother’s Table, the Lynn Public Schools and the Lynn Food and Fitness Alliance.

Organizers said that they hope that this is the first of many future MLK Days of Service in Lynn. “There was a tremendous response from the community to volunteer,” said Briana Iacovetta, SCI Lynn Americorp Member who coordinated volunteers for the event. “More people expressed interest then we could accommodate so hopefully next year we will find even more service opportunities for people to participate in.”

If Lynn community members or agencies have an idea for a service project for next year’s Lynn MLK Day of Service they can contact the East Lynn Community Association at 781-346-9060.

Volunteers Needed: College Mentoring

mentor and mentee

Girls Inc. of Lynn is in need of volunteer mentors! The Mentor program is run through the Teen Programs at Girls Inc and mentors will receive training, materials and resources to help their mentees through the college application process. Girls Inc. has run a successful college mentoring program for several years, last year we had 18 volunteer mentors and 30 girls in the program. Our goal is to be able to have a 1:1 ratio of girls to mentors.

Mentors are asked to commit to attending Wednesday evening meetings at the Girls Inc. of Lynn from 6-7:30pm from October to May. If interested, please contact Sahar Momand, College Access Fellow, at smomand@girlsinclynn.org or 781-592-9744 ext. 210.
