Youth Leadership/Volunteer Opportunity with the SCI Lynn Citywide Youth Council

Are you interested in community service? Do you want to take a leadership role in your community?

The SCI Lynn Citywide Youth Council is looking for new members. If you are a Middle School or High School student and live in Lynn, please consider joining the Citywide Youth Council. Applications are available below to download as attachments, or at the SCI Lynn office, located at 52 Andrew Street, Straight Ahead Ministries, Family and Children’s Services, Girls Incorporated of Lynn, and the Greater Lynn YMCA. This is the first year of the SCI Lynn Citywide Youth Council, and we seek to engage a diverse group from ages 12 to 18 who share a desire to make a difference in their community.

The Youth Council will meet every other week, on a weekday, after school, but the exact day and time will be determined by the popular vote of the Youth Council. Meetings usually last one hour, and light refreshments will be provided. From November to June, the Youth Council will lead community service projects and civic engagement projects, including the distribution and management of grants to other youth initiated service projects such as park clean ups and resource fairs . The SCI Lynn Citywide Youth Council also offers an outstanding opportunity to enhance leadership through the use of SCI's Civic Skills Checklist; this provides a concrete way to build practical skills such as public speaking and event planning.

Remember, applications will be available at Family and Children’s Services of Greater Lynn, located at 111 North Common Street, Straight Ahead Ministries, and the SCI Lynn office. Applications can be returned to the SCI Lynn office, located at 52 Andrew Street or emailed to GayLynne Samsonoff at GSamsonoff@socialcapitalinc.org

The deadline for applications is Monday, November 2nd at 5pm. If you have any questions please contact the SCI Lynn AmeriCorps Youth Leadership Coordinator, GayLynne Samsonoff at 781-599-1269.

This program is coordinated by SCI Lynn, and sponsored by the Amelia Peabody Foundation, Cabot Family Charitable Trust, Foley Hoag Foundation, and the Mass. Service Alliance.

Henry Avenue Park Clean Up

Community members and residents in the Henry Avenue Park neighborhood have begun to make plans to clean-up and refurbish the park. On January 5th over twenty people, community members, neighborhood residents and community officials, gathered at a residence near the park to coordinate the project. Antonio Guitieres offered his experience from other park clean-ups such as Ames Park, along with Lisa Connelly who helped revamp the High Rock Tower Park. Department of Public Works has offered their assistance in putting in lighting, park benches, and trash bins. Local residents of Henry Ave. were also excited to gain the assistance of other community members and look forward to helping oversea the project. The park committee would like to see the basketball courts finished, the tennis court turned into an all purpose area, benches put in, and area for small children, and murals done by youth. The projected date for the next planning committee will be Monday, February 2nd, and the actual clean-up is to be held April 18th. Graffiti, part 2

This is a picture of the basketball court at Strawberry Park in Lynn, just prior to a cleanup by "Part of the Solution" youth group. Old graffiti has been painted over. It's a placeholder of sorts because shortly afterward, a mural was painted on this spot in conjuction with the cleanup. Strawberry Park is on Strawberry St. near the Stop & Shop on Western Ave. Part of the Solution is the youth advisory group of the Communities that Care coalition (CTC). The cleanup happened in August 2008.
